Working on an interview round-up post for WiC, and as soon as I clicked on a Joe Dempsie article and opened it up, my playlist shuffled and “Shoop” started playing.

onlybylaura asked: "Actually, genetics is a pretty important factor. My parents are cousins, so they actually had to do a couple of genetic tests to make sure me and my sister had a chance of being born "normal". The cells and chromossomes divisions may take a wrong turn and the children might either be born with brain diseases/down syndrome/ and others. Anyway, that's also why some of the targs went mad. it's quite a real problem, inbreeding between families."

I read a study rather recently for school that showed the percentage of defects was higher in cases of incest but only a small margin. After a few generations of inbreeding, the margin would increase substantially. (*cough* Targaryens *cough*) If I could find the article I’d link it, but basically the idea is that in the Targs case, the madness is in their family, in the way that many families have a history of mental illness. And it’ll be more prevalent if they don’t marry out of their kin and get fresh DNA, but inbreeding in and of itself doesn’t automatically cause insanity. That’s the wrong assumption that pop culture makes.

lesfrileux asked: "If you want to be accurate about it, there's a greater chance there could be a genetic disease expressed, but only if it is known to be carried within the family. The immune system is the biggest one to suffer from the lack of diversity."

kermitsdreams asked: "so that means children born of incest have higher chances of having birth defects huh? we musn't be too hard on Joffrey then~ :D"

They have a slightly higher chance, yes, but in general I think pop culture overstates that chance of incest churning out genetic defects with one generation of inbreeding. (Though Tywin’s wife was his cousin as well.) Myrcella and Tommen haven’t shown any women- or animal-killing tendencies so far, so I’m guessing Joffrey’s problem is less genetics and more just being the Crown Prince who’s been raised by a brutish sort (Robert) and taught to think he’s entitled to everything. But who knows, genetics could play a role.

rocketmf asked: "For the Jaime/Cersei offspring question, because they're fraternal twins (meaning two separate eggs were released by the mother at time of fertilisation, and each egg was fertilised by a different sperm) it's no different genetically than if a brother and sister who were born years apart had kids. Identical twins would be much different (1 egg + 1 sperm split into two offspring AFTER fertilisation=same genetics) but then they'd be the same biological sex (unless some weirdass mutation occured)."

(continued answer) Basically, the main problem with incest has to do with the lack of diversity of the chromosome/gene pool available. It’s the same reason endangered animals have a hard time recovering, or the medical issues many purebred pets have. You have a higher chance of gene mutations being expressed if your selection of available chromosomes is so small, with little diversity in genes. If that makes any sense…

Iwan Rheon talking about his role in Game Of Thrones [x]

zombiestudmuffin asked: "Since Jaime and Cersei are twins, does that make joffrey, tommen, and myrcella not only their children, but speaking on the gentic level, their siblings as well?"

There’s a thought. I suck at science, but I know that boy-girl twins are no more genetically similar than regular siblings. But the DNA is coming from the same line. Anyone ever do the chart on this? Creepy Lannister fun. It’s not so much a Punnett square as it as a Punnett circle.

amalinth asked: "Don't you think Iwan Rehon looks like Syndrome from The Incredibles?"

I think he looks like someone that I would want to be inside me.

jaimesluckyhand asked: "No love for Daniel Portman outside of his character, lol? Oh HBO, what fine men and women you have given us... so attractive! :'3"

Oh he’s a honey. The cast is full of gorgeous people. That’s why it was a “partial list.” One day on Twitter, Daniel mentioned he might post a pic of himself in a kilt but then he never did. I’m still bitter.

My son may be a King, but I am no Queen… only a mother who would keep her children safe, however she could.

to the anon who just complained about me “objectifying” Joe Dempsie, you appear to be lost. This is tumblrofthrones. I frequently reference wanting to do various members of the cast, but to prevent any future confusion or offense, here’s a partial list of cast members I find sexually attractive:

Joe Dempsie

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

Gwendoline Christie

John Bradley

Natalie Dormer

Richard Madden

Oona Chaplin

Iain Glen

Iwan Rheon (out of character! out of character!)

Jacob Anderson

Philip McGinley

Esme Bianco (RIP Ros)

Ian McElhinney

Natalia Tena

Rory McCann

Conleth Hill

Joseph Mawle (COME BACK, BENJEN FOR THE LOVE OF GOD)

And the anon must not have been here when Jaqen H’ghar was on the show. The things I would do to Tom Wlaschiha are ungodly.

okay the list is getting too long but you get the idea.

also I’m turning off anon for the rest of today because some people are being assy. But I appreciate the cool supportive anons, you guys rock. <3

Valyria was the last ember, and Valyria is gone. The dragons are no more, the giants are dead, the children of the forest forgotten with all their lore. Sad to say, but magic is gone.
