A Song of Ice and Fire is not about kings. It’s about the people who surround, support and get stomped on by kings in quests for thrones and power. In older fantasy stories, the young kings are the heroes and lead characters, so George R.R. Martin subverted that by presenting his story through the perspective of everyone but the kings. The tale is now told by the rulers’ friends, mothers, children, wives, and the other people who usually become fringe characters. The only ruler with a point-of-view chapter is Daenerys, and she is not a Westerosi king.

Robert, Joffrey, Renly, Robb, Stannis, Balon- they don’t get to tell the story. They aren’t the heroes of the story. There may not be any, but if there are, it’s not them.

For people who have not read the A Song of Ice and Fire books 

This is the point at which I recommend people who haven’t read the books stop going in the Game of Thrones tag altogether. It’s overrun with HUGE spoilers, and people don’t tag them as such half the time. And not everyone can use tumblr savior, anyway. I wish we could count on book readers to be more considerate about tagging major spoilers appropriately, but it’s not going to happen.

So, for my posts that do not contain book spoilers, I’m going to start tagging them “Unsullied Fandom” like was discussed a couple weeks ago. If other people want to use the tag, feel free.

I’ll include previews and trailers that may contain spoiler content as trailers do, but I won’t be pointing out what things mean in a spoilery fashion. And you don’t have to press play on videos. I’ll be judicious about the screencaps of trailers I tag, leaving out anything that I feel is too full of spoilers. That will be my own policy for the Unsullied Fandom tag.
