Jack Gleeson - Good Guy vs Evil Guy

Vote for Joffrey for Best Villain

It’s the last 24 hours of the TV.com voter-chosen awards, and Joffrey has been leading all the way. Evil Alaric from TVD is creeping up though, so let’s throw some more votes Joff’s way. No registration required, vote away!

A Game Of Borders

No idea why they showed up like this (without text) but hey, the manuscript artwork is still really gorgeous.

"Robert’s deathbed. That scene was revelatory for me. The idea that Joff is just a kid who wanted a dad and never had one."
— Jack Gleeson, on Joffrey Baratheon in Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones

I like how Robert gets so much flack for being a “bad king” yet he was significantly better than both his predecessor and his successor.

So? Just because Aerys and Joffrey are especially terrible kings, that doesn’t mean Robert is a good king. They’re all assholes. He’s just the least assholish of the three, and even some might not agree with that.

He brought a peace for seventeen years, after such a huge upheaval of conquering a house that had ruled for 300 years. He kept taxes and food in order, he was not hated by the people, he quelled any rebellions that stood against him, he kept such fearsome figures as Tywin Lannister in order. In fact, I’d say his reign was rather a positive one, all in all. He might have turned into a bitter, bloated old apathetic thug, but that’s saying nothing about his reign.

It’s pretty clear in AGoT that Jon Arryn is responsible for all those good things. Robert drank and fought and had sex with women, but he didn’t make a lot of practical decisions- it was left to the Hand. Everything went to hell when Jon Arryn died. He was also one of Joffrey’s parents (not bio, but he raised him) and shares part of the responsibility for the boy turning out as he did.

False;  Joffrey is mad because he is inbred, not because of Robert.

Yeah that’s why Tommen and Myrcella are violent and completely selfish, because of inbreeding.
Oh wait.

The books make it clear that Joffrey looked up to his father, even though Robert didn’t pay him much attention, and he commits certain actions in the books because he thinks Robert would approve. It’s discussed later in ASOIAF so perhaps this will come up in the TV series as well.

I’ll try to be clear in the amount of words I get on this, but Joff is right to behead Ned in his own mind. From his limited and childish viewpoint he is rightful undisputed king and Ned is a traitor for saying otherwise. He doesn’t know that hes full Lannister. In his mind Ned should be beheaded for treason. But as readers from a informed POV, its obvious that hes wrong. Id be cool to see a Joff POV chapter, i think. At least as of the 2nd book its easy to forget how uninformed Joff is in this.

It may be right in Joffrey’s head, but treason is a legal concept, and so the standards for it lie in the law and not his beliefs. I realize it’s Westeros and law is more fluid and subject to royal whim, but Ned is not guilty of treason. He just isn’t. Joff may think so, but it doesn’t make okay since his action is based in ignorance. He could have investigated why Ned would make such a claim but he didn’t. He’s old enough to ask a few questions. He didn’t want to know the truth, so he killed Ned because he isn’t that smart and thought it would make the bad words die.

I’m not very interested in his POV. When someone is so single-mindedly selfish and sociopathic, it would all be rather one-note.

My response a a previous ask, whether it matters or not…. The issue was whether or not Joff was right to behead Ned. I see it as he was in his right to behead Ned. He is the rightful heir in his mind. He thinks he is Robert’s son, and that makes him king. Ned went said that he wasn’t the king, and that makes him a traitor. The punishment for treason is death. However, he was stupid to do it because of the effect it had on the rest of the kingdom. He failed to act strategically- no surprise.

It’s only treason if it’s not correct. Regardless of what Joffrey believed, Ned was right. Joffrey was not the legal king by genetics and also not by Robert’s last written statement, thanks to Ned’s wording. Joffrey didn’t have the right legally to convict anyone of treason, regardless of his belief.
