How long did the Targaryen’s rule Westeros? Did different families take over and lose the throne periodically or were the Targaryen’s the sole rulers for a long amount of time? Im asking because i always find it stupid when Khaleesi says that the Iron Throne is her birthright and that she will take back what is hers, but if her family ruled Westoros exclusively than i guess im wrong and the throne really is hers

House Targaryen ruled for a few hundred years before the Rebellion, without any other great families taking over. Daenerys is the heir of the Targaryens, since with Rhaegar and his childrens’ deaths, it passed to Viserys, and then of course Dany. She has the birthright in her eyes, but that doesn’t really matter most of the time. Fact is, the Targaryens themselves had no right to the throne when they took it. They decided to conquer Westeros, and their dragons forced all the kingdoms to bow to them. Some might feel they’ve merely take the throne back from the conquering Targaryens (though the Baratheons did have some Targ ancestry). It’s a matter of perspective.

So yes she is the Targaryen heir, but you could argue the Targs didn’t have any rights, beyond the right of might- they were stronger with more firepower. No one deserves the throne by virtue of their birth, when you get down to it.

Do you think Tyrion could have Varys killed? Or is Varys so powerful/well connected that he would find out immediately and have it stopped?

I think it’s unlikely that Tyrion would get the drop on Varys. He is amazingly well-connected and his little birds are everywhere. He knows everyone’s secrets and I’d say that he’s not above blackmailing people for safety. Chances are, he would catch wind of Tyrion trying to send or hire someone to do it. And Tyrion himself would have a tough time killing Varys unless he found a way to remove Varys’s physical advantage. It’s not impossible, but it’s hard.

Points to think about: 1)Ned wouldn’t take the oath until reaching the Wall, hence it would be possible for him to “escape” and go to Winterfell. And Yoren would most likely have taken him there so getting away wouldn’t be a problem. 2) Would Ned really accept an order from someone who he believes to be a false king? 3)I don’t think he would just forget about his family and the fate of the kingdom and just join the NW. He’s a soldier, i think he would have fought for justice. Just my thoughts

Taking the oath is rather a technicality. He might have the opportunity to escape physically before he gets to Castle Black, but if Ned gives his word he’s joining the NW, he’s not going to run off. I don’t think Yoren would’ve let him escape on purpose either, despite his friendliness with Ned. He helped with Arya because she’s a kid and a female, but if Ned ‘volunteered’ for the Watch, Yoren’s taking him there.

It’s not an order from the king, it’s an offer from the enemy, one last chance to live. He can join the NW, or die. He may be a soldier, but ultimately he is a man of honor. That’s Ned’s problem. He gave his word, and he keeps it, even when it makes people miserable. Including himself.

Lets say that Joffrey didnt behead Ned and allowed him to spend the rest of his life in the Nights Watch instead. Do you think that Ned, being the honorable man that he is, would have stayed in the Nights Watch upon arriving at the Wall or do you think he would’ve went straight to Robb to help fight against the Lannisters?

Ned has too much honor for that. If he accepted the deal to join the NW, he would go to the Wall and take the oath. I suppose he could send Robb a raven explaining why he chose to, and giving advice, but they swear to lay down family allegiances when they sign up. I can’t picture Ned breaking the vows when he executed Will (or Gared in the book) for doing that.
