Thrones producers have enlisted Brooklyn group the Hold Steady to bring to life a tune from George R.R. Martin’s fantasy saga. The band will perform “The Bear and the Maiden Fair,” with lyrics by Martin (below) and music by the show’s composer Ramin Djawadi. Last year, The National recorded Martin’s ominous “The Rains of Castemere” for season two, while “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” is more like a boisterous tavern song.

I don’t know if you’ve done anything like this before, but I found this awesome video on youtube that examines the different character themes of GOT with selections from the soundtrack. It’s a great showcase of fantastic music by Ramin Djawadi (who I think we can all agree is amazing). I think the Dany and Stark themes are most commonly noted, but there’s a lot of other themes here that I haven’t noticed as much before. (Stannis’ and Theon’s in particular are great! I did see the video before when it circulated in June but it’s still awesome to see the amount of thought that went into the show’s musical themes. Time for a revisiting, I’d say. Thanks for submitting it!

Looking for More Writers for a musical Game of Thrones project

I have to go and dig out my manuscript paper because I think Tora might have created a monster (the songs are just not satisfactory. I’m going to have to see if I remember how to write lyrics). And I don’t have a fucking keyboard anymore. I’m going to have to work out how to actually use Sibelius.

If anyone here fancies trying their hand at lyric writing for characters and/or events in Game of Thrones (let’s stick to book one only for now until I see if I have bitten off more than I can chew - LOL YES I HAVE, MY AMBITION FAR EXCEEDS MY TALENT) drop me an ask.

I’m not looking for serious and ponderous, more lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek. Doggerel rhyming schemes are A-OK. The bar is set so low for this, you have no idea.

Please consider giving it a try if you have a favourite character. It certainly won’t be worse than whatever the hell I’m going to come up with. I don’t have standards. If you can spell, it’s good enough for me.
