Just one person today.

She read over my latest WiC article for me before I posted it, gave me her opinion, and is generally kind and smart and funny, and her take-no-shit gameface is awesome.

One more reason why Catelyn > Everyone else.

thenorthdismembers asked: "The Dornish are not based thoroughly and exhaustively on "Arabs, Turks and Iranians" according to Martin. BTW the North strikes me as Scottish or northern English at the very least (not in Martin's words but neither is "Arabs, Turks, and Iranians"), but clearly not all northmen were cast with actors from those areas."

Very good point also. And there’s the whole messy question of nationality vs. ethnicity and so on.

edit: I said nationalist instead of nationality. Hmm.

I know it’s the worst way to start off a post and I’m sorry and yes you can all hate me but

For all the talk of the old gods, even Melisandre’s repeated comments about the “Lord of Light,” it is the Goddess, in all her magnificence, elegance, vulnerability, bravery, mystery and cruelty, all her many forms, young and old, beautiful and ugly, wise and foolish, who is running the show.”

- from the HuffPo article just linked on tumblrofthrones

I don’t get this.  I have seen the sentiment certainly that ASOIAF/GoT is “about the women” and I am not trying to say that simply because I don’t see the point it isn’t there but

I don’t see how it’s the point.  There is a LOT in ASOIAF/GoT about women, but when men outnumber women as characters, when women are more objectified than men by the narrative, when the “realistic” depiction of the patriarchy ultimately limits many women’s agency and even livelihood (perhaps rightly so, but STILL), when a heavy burden of the female narrative is placed on off-screen women and women as symbols and blah blah blah … IDK I’m sorry it sounds an awful lot like appeasement to me.

Maybe I will get a lot of shit for this and maybe I will deserve it too.  But hey what’s fandom without a little shitstorm.

Oh I don’t agree 100% with the HuffPo article but I found it interesting. I do see the story of ASOIAF being largely about and driven by women because they survive and go on when the men keep dying or fading away and we have so many female POVs. Some of the women rule through the men, so they are in control of their destiny as much as any character can be in this fucked up world.

I guess I don’t see the “realistic” depiction of patriarchy as limiting the women character’s ability to tell the story and be a significant portion of it. I don’t know if this is making much sense. But I don’t think what you’re saying deserves any kind of hatred, as it’s a valid criticism that women are more objectified in that world, etc.
